Times tables practice chart
The Year 4 multiplication tables check gives 6 seconds per question. This chart trains that speed: daily 5-minute drills with mixed tables, progress tracked by week.
How to use the chart
- Print one chart per week, stick it where homework happens
- Set a 6-second timer per question (the real MTC timing)
- Call out the question, child answers before the timer
- Tick correct, circle wrong, revisit circled facts the next day
Which tables to focus on
- The MTC focuses on 6, 7, 8, 9 and 12 times tables (the harder ones)
- 2, 5 and 10 are usually secure by Year 4
- Mix tables within each session for true fluency
- Track which specific facts keep appearing in the 'wrong' column
Progress tracking
- Week 1: baseline score out of 25
- Weeks 2-4: daily practice, weekly re-test
- Target: 25/25 consistently before the check
Tutor tip: Fluency matters because every later maths topic assumes it: fractions, algebra, ratio all require instant recall. Five minutes a day now saves hours of struggle later.
