What is retrieval practice?

If your child reads their notes three times and still forgets everything, the problem is the method, not the memory. Retrieval practice, the simple act of pulling information out of your head instead of putting it in again, is one of the most robust findings in cognitive science.
Why re-reading fails
Re-reading feels productive because the words look familiar, but familiarity is not memory. Cognitive scientists call the trap the illusion of fluency: recognising material is a completely different skill from producing it under exam pressure.
Retrieval practice flips the direction. Instead of looking at the answer, the student tries to recall it first. Every successful pull strengthens the memory trace; every struggled pull (even a failed one followed by checking) does too. Researchers call this the testing effect, and it holds across ages, subjects and formats.
