How to improve reading comprehension

Comprehension is the gap between decoding words and understanding them, and it is the skill GCSE English, 11+ and every other subject quietly depends on. It is built with specific habits, not just more reading.
Read actively, not passively
Comprehension grows when reading is interactive. Before reading: predict from the title. During: ask 'why did that character do that?', 'what do you think happens next?'. After: 'summarise it in two sentences', 'what was the main point?'. Ten minutes of this beats thirty minutes of silent reading.
Build vocabulary deliberately
Comprehension fails at unknown words. Keep a word list: every new word gets a definition, a sentence and a revisit later in the week. Five new words a week is 250 a year, which is transformative for exam papers and for confidence in class discussions.
Practise the exam-specific skills early
- ✓ Finding evidence: 'show me the line that proves that'
- ✓ Inference: 'what does that suggest, without the text saying it?'
- ✓ Summarising: two-sentence versions of chapters and articles
- ✓ Comparing: how two characters, texts or viewpoints differ
When comprehension needs more than habits

Slightly above stretches comprehension; far above causes frustration and guessing. The 'five-finger rule' works: if five or more unknown words appear on a page, it is too hard for independent reading.
Do audiobooks build comprehension?＋
Yes for vocabulary, story structure and listening comprehension. Pairing audio with the physical book adds decoding practice too.
