How to write a personal statement

The personal statement is 4,000 characters (about 500 words) that can make or break a UCAS application for competitive courses. It is not a CV: it is an argument for why this student, on this course, at this university.
The structure that works
- โ Opening: a specific, personal hook that shows genuine interest in the subject (not a dictionary quote)
- โ Academic paragraph 1: why this course, connecting A-Level subjects to the degree
- โ Academic paragraph 2: a specific topic, book, project or experience that deepened the interest
- โ Skills and extracurricular: what else they bring (leadership, work experience, hobbies)
- โ Closing: a forward-looking sentence about what they will contribute at university
Common mistakes to avoid
- โ Starting with 'From a young age, I have always wanted to be a doctor' (admissions tutors see this hundreds of times)
- โ Listing achievements without connecting them to the course or skills
- โ Naming one university when the statement goes to all five choices
- โ Waffling: every sentence must earn its place in 4,000 characters
- โ Copying from example statements online (UCAS uses similarity detection)
How tutors help
A-Level tutors who have supported UCAS applications can: help the student identify their strongest stories and connect them to the course, review drafts against admissions criteria, and give honest feedback about whether the statement would stand out. They cannot write it for the student, and good tutors don't.

When should the personal statement be written?๏ผ
Draft in the summer before Year 13, finalise by October (earlier for Oxbridge and medicine, which have mid-October deadlines).
Can the same statement be used for different courses?๏ผ
If the five UCAS choices are all the same subject, yes. If they are different courses, the statement needs to be broad enough to cover all of them or focused on transferable skills.
