IB vs A-Levels: how to choose
6 min read ยท updated 2026-09-01
Families in international schools and some UK independent schools face this choice at 16. Both lead to university, but they suit very different students. Here is the honest comparison.
Structure
- โ IB Diploma: six subjects (three HL, three SL) plus Theory of Knowledge, Extended Essay and CAS. Broad, sustained, two-year programme
- โ A-Levels: three or four subjects chosen freely, assessed primarily by final exams. Deep, focused, flexible combination
Which suits which student
- โ IB suits: students who are broadly strong across subjects, manage sustained workload well, and want to keep university options open
- โ A-Levels suit: students with clear subject passions, those who prefer depth over breadth, and those who want to focus on their strongest areas
- โ The workload difference is real: the IB is often described as more demanding because it requires consistent effort across six subjects plus core components
University recognition
Both are accepted worldwide. UK universities publish IB point requirements alongside A-Level grade requirements. Competitive courses (medicine, law, engineering) have specific HL subject requirements for IB students, just as they have A-Level subject requirements.
The practical factors
- โ School availability: not all schools offer the IB, and not all offer every A-Level combination
- โ Transition: moving from GCSE to IB is a bigger jump (more subjects, more coursework)
- โ Tutoring: both are supported by one-to-one tutoring, but the IB's breadth means more subjects to manage
FAQs
Is the IB better for university admissions?๏ผ
Neither is better; both are rigorous and widely recognised. Universities publish requirements for both. The choice should be based on the student's learning style and subject interests.
Can we switch from IB to A-Levels or vice versa?๏ผ
Possible but disruptive, usually at the end of Year 11 or after the first term of Year 12. The later the switch, the harder the catch-up.
