How to build maths confidence

5 min read · updated 2026-09-01

Maths anxiety is real, and it creates a cycle: the child struggles, feels ashamed, avoids maths, falls further behind and becomes more anxious. Breaking that cycle requires a specific approach, not just more practice.

Start below their level, deliberately

The fastest way to build confidence is to start with a topic the child can already do, and then extend it slightly. This creates a feeling of success before introducing anything new. A tutor who starts at the child's actual level (not their school year) and builds from there is far more effective than one who starts at the curriculum level and hopes the child catches up.

Change the language

  • Replace 'I'm bad at maths' with 'I haven't learned this strategy yet'
  • Replace 'this is too hard' with 'this is the next step after what I already know'
  • Replace 'I got it wrong' with 'I found a gap I can fix'
  • Never say 'I was bad at maths too' (children inherit that identity)

Celebrate the process, not just the answer

Maths marks come from method, so praise the method: 'I love how you showed every step', 'That's a clever way to check your answer'. Children who think the answer is the only thing that matters give up when they cannot see the answer immediately. Children who know that method earns marks keep going.

FAQs

How long does it take to build maths confidence?

Confidence improves within the first few sessions when the child experiences success at their actual level. Grade movement takes longer, but confidence is the prerequisite for grade movement, so it comes first.

Should I tell my child they're good at maths even if they struggle?

Praise effort and strategy specifically rather than generic ability: 'I love how you kept trying different approaches' is more powerful than 'you're so clever'.
